Students Witness Himachal Assembly Proceedings as Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania Highlights Youth Role in Democracy

During separate interactions with students from Government Senior Secondary School, Chaupal; Saraswati Paradise School, Sanjauli; Government Senior Secondary School, Lalpani; and the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Himachal Pradesh University, Pathania said India has a population of 1.40 billion and has the largest young population in the world. He said India is therefore also known as a country of youth.

Pathania said the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies are the biggest temples of democracy, where elected representatives from different parts of the country and from designated constituencies are elected to the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. These elected members constitute the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies, he said.

He said the power to make laws rests only with elected representatives, meaning that only the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies can make laws.

Pathania said India’s parliamentary system is based on a federal structure comprising the states and the Union. During the interaction, students asked the Assembly Speaker several questions, which he answered one by one.

He said the increasing interest among students and young people in witnessing Assembly proceedings was a positive sign for democracy. Around 200 students are visiting the Assembly every day to watch the proceedings, he said, adding that their growing participation reflects the strength of the democratic system and the youth’s unwavering faith in it.

Pathania also recalled the Bal Session, saying the way children performed the roles of Chief Minister, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and members of the Council of Ministers was unforgettable and surprising. He said the issues of public concern raised by the children and their efforts to seek solutions after discussions were exemplary and commendable.

He said the Bal Session was organised to ensure that everyone learns about, understands and becomes familiar with the democratic system so that its importance can be conveyed to every section of society.

The Assembly Speaker invited everyone to watch the proceedings of the House and extended his best wishes to all the students.
